I made this hat for my sister, not for the recipient the pattern author had in mind, which makes people laugh:

When your daughter announces she is bringing her boyfriend to dinner two weeks before the holidays, here is the perfect gift.

It’s a simple ribbed hat on 60 stitches for bulky yarn which is exactly what I wanted. It looks narrow in the photo but it stretches much wider and has a nice snug fit. I used all the remaining yarn to make a large pompom. It’s a bit wobbly – next time I would consider sewing the pompom down in multiple places instead of just the center.

I’m mainly a sock knitter, so it was nice to work on a project that goes so much faster. I could have done it all in a single day if I wanted to. The only problem I had was that none of my interchangeable cables were the perfect length, so I used a longer one and had to push stitches on and off the needles much more often than usual to keep them evenly distributed.
