Project Bag

I made this bag for my girlfriend since she’s learning how to knit. At first I was just getting some supplies to put together a starter kit, but when I saw all the fat quarter fabrics I couldn’t resist picking some to make a project bag.

I forgot to buy a zipper, but luckily I was able to repurpose one from the clear vinyl bag that a set of bedsheets came in. The dark blue contrasts nicely with the floral print and the lining. A rare win for hoarding random packaging!

This was my first time making a bag, though I already had some practice turning corners and sewing zippers from taking the Advanced Construction Techniques class at The New York Sewing Center earlier this year.

I found a video tutorial from the Stitched Up! YouTube channel based on the blog post linked above. They do things a bit differently so I referred to both of them. Overall it was pretty easy. It was especially fun turning out the bag through the final unsewn corner. The only trouble I had was that the top corners were too bulky, and I couldn’t fully turn them out. I’ll have to work on that for the next one.

I’m quite happy with the result. The lining makes it look great inside, with no need to finish any seams. It has a boxed bottom and I interfaced the outer fabric, so it can stand on its own. It’s just big enough to fit straight knitting needles and a small project along with all the other paraphernalia you need.
