Broken Seed Sock

This was my first time knitting socks with two colors, using a popular free pattern that contrasts variegated yarn with a solid color. For the variegated yarn I used a skein given to me by my aunt, who runs Blue Bird Yarn. The colorway is Guards! Guards!, referencing the book in my favorite fantasy series Discworld. For the solid color, I used some Malabrigo I’d gotten for another project and didn’t end up needing.

The pattern is very simple: it’s just seed stitch broken up by plain knit rounds. It makes a cool texture of white pentagons that contain the variegated colors. I think it should have used an odd number of stitches to make the BOR more seamless, but it’s not a big deal.

Knitting with two colors in the round was easy, though next time I would avoid pulling the first stitch as tightly as I usually do, since it’s coming from two rounds down. Knitting flat (as I always do since Seventies Stripes Sock) was harder, since the yarn isn’t there when you need it. At first I thought I’d need two working yarns of each color. But then I realized I could just work the right side twice, then the wrong side twice. This worked, though for some reason it resulted in elongated selvedge stitches that were hard to avoid.

The other thing with two balls of yarn is they get tangled a lot. The reason it took me so long to finish these socks is I went on a few trips during this time, and it was more convenient to work a single-ball project while traveling.
